We got to the top of the lift station late, of course finding it closed and being left with the option of an uncomfortable night there or a very long, hard walk down. We chose the latter and continued to walk for hours though some of the worse slushy snow either of us had ever experienced, we arrived back in Zermatt late in the night and were both completely spent. Looking at the current weather the next day, and the forecast we decided that Zermatt was not the place to be that week, so we packed up and headed down the next day – very disappointed and eager to find something to make this trip worthwhile.
All in all this trip was an enjoyable scout out of the Matterhorn area, with a good route thrown in at the end, it was enormously disappointing that we were unable to climb the Matterhorn but unfortunately that is all part of the game. We have both agreed to return and have another crack at the Matterhorn.
